As I finished reading the comics, Peanuts to be exact; a thought occurred to me, did Linus fully understand his blanket? Was he aware of the meaning of the term “blanket”, the origin, and evolution of a blanket? I am willing to bet not! During the course of this article, I am going to enlighten you with such items plus more.

We will begin this journey with the definitions, the history of the blanket; and, the various uses of a blanket. Did you know that a blanket might not always be something that you can touch? Or, did you know that blankets are quite the gift for the pampered pet? Shall we under cover this simple but yet compelling cover?

The word blanket can be used in various ways; from an adjective to a noun to a verb, this is one word that is cross-functional. The word blanket dates back as far as the 14 th century; and, the most recent definition being added to Webster's Dictionary around the late 1960's. Can you guess which variation was added in the 1960's? If your answer was security blanket, you are correct. The term “security blanket” was coined to describe an object that one might use to add comfort to them during nervous times.

The term is usually in reference to a child that clings to an object that brings them comfort or protection from environmental dangers. For instance, have you ever tried to take a blanket away from a toddler that is being introduced to a stranger or strange environment? Those that can relate to this scenario, know and realize that the child clinging to the item in the arms is their “security blanket”; this item is their safe haven, it is trusted and true to them. However, even today, Linus' security blanket is just that; a true blue blanket usually made from a cotton/nylon blend.
