Thinking Outside the Blanket

We thus far have examined everything from fleece blankets to baby blankets as tangible items. However, blankets are also used as an intangible item. Did you know that grass could have a blanket of dew? Or, that snow can create a blanket? Yes! The word blanket can be used as a description too. For instance, we could use the word blanket to describe a certain group or condition; the car insurance agent issued a blanket policy to cover the registrant. The word also can be used as a noun; much like this article, we spoke about a covering.

The same form can be used to describe a covering for grass; a blanket of dew covered the grass overnight. And, the same word can be used as a verb; here the word would be doing the action of covering. An example might be the ice blanketed the trees as it stormed through out the night. And, perhaps the most humorous form is "pigs in a blanket". No, no, no, pigs aren't wrapped in a blanket; then, what does this term mean?

It is actually a term that is used to describe a recipe. The recipe calls for a variant of pork to be used and then wrapped in pastry type dough. Hence, pigs in the blanket! But, do you see the underlying rationale to this term? An item is being wrapped or covered; the pork item is being covered with a dough blanket.

In summary, I bet Linus had no clue that his security blanket had such an interesting background. To answer the question, "was Linus aware what his "security blanket" really meant"? No, all Linus knew and needed to know was that he had a soft item that covered him; providing him warmth both figuratively and literally for his comfort needs.

So, no matter what your need may be for a blanket, we truly hope that you too find your security blanket.
